Managing Your Frameworks: Scoping, Unscoping, and Mapping

Learn how to scope controls and unscope from the frameworks section of settings.

Updated over a week ago

A key part of your compliance journey is knowing exactly which controls apply to your organization—and which don't. Here is your step-by-step guide to scoping, unscoping, and mapping your framework controls in PolicyCo.

How to Scope Controls

Scoping a control simply tells the system, "Yes, my organization needs to follow this rule."

  1. Head over to Settings and click on Frameworks (or Regulations, depending on your custom labels).

  2. Select the specific framework you want to work on. (Note: If the framework you need isn't listed or requires an update, just let us know! We'll get it added or updated for you.)

  3. Review the content: You can click on any row to expand a control and read its full details in the top right corner.

  4. Scope individually: To bring a specific control into scope, simply check the box next to it. That’s all it takes!

  5. Scope in bulk: Look near the top of the page for your bulk actions.

    • If you haven't scoped anything yet, you will see a red button that says Scope alongside the total number of controls available.

    • If you already have some controls scoped (indicated by a checkmark), you will see two buttons: one to scope all remaining controls, and one to remove all controls from your scope.

Caution: Be careful when choosing to scope all controls at once! If you previously spent time hand-picking specific controls, scoping everything will overwrite that custom list, and you cannot easily reverse it.

How to Unscope Controls

Realized a control no longer applies to your organization? Removing it from your scope is just as easy.

  1. Navigate to Settings and click Frameworks.

  2. Simply uncheck the box next to the controls that are no longer in scope.

Good to know: If you unscope a control that is already linked to an article, PolicyCo remembers the association! If you ever add that control back into scope later, your links will be automatically restored.

Mapping Controls to Your Articles

Once you've got your frameworks scoped, the real magic happens when you start mapping those controls to your internal policies. This is how you prove that what you're doing in your articles actually meets your compliance requirements.

Here is how to link them up:

  1. Click on the Frameworks (or Regulations) section in your main side menu.

  2. Find the specific control you’re working on and give it a double-click.

  3. Look over to the right side of your screen—under the Linked Articles section, click on Add Articles.

  4. A search bar will pop up. Type in a keyword for the article you're looking for, select it, and you're all set!

Pro Tip: If you're actively writing or editing a policy and suddenly realize it needs to be linked to a control, you can do this in reverse! Check out our guide on Mapping External Controls to Articles to see how to manage this directly from the Editor.
